What I’ve learned is that the primary key to loosing weight is your metabolism. Your metabolism has to burn more calories and fat that you take in. When you don’t eat often enough, your body basically thinks it’s not getting what it needs and it "stores" the fat for later use if needed (but usually never needs it because you keep in taking more and more but in large qty’s fewer times a day). In my research I found several key factors that contributed to my own success.

1. Eating 5-6 small meals a day rather than 1 or 2 big meals a day will speed up your metabolism. And always start with breakfast! It’s important to kick start your metabolism right off the bat and keep it going strong all day. My own schedule was to eat breakfast at 8 am (at my desk), a snack at 10 am, luch at noon, a snack at 2 pm sometimes a snack at 4 or 5 pm and then dinner around 7 pm.

2. Protein speeds your metabolism too. Choose items that are high in protein but low in calorie/fat. I always started my day with something like a bagel with fat free cream cheese, a bran cereal with reduced fat milk, a toasted muffin with reduced fat peanut butter, oatmeal with reduced fat milk mixed in, a couple of boiled eggs or something like that since dairy is high in protein. Chicken and turkey are also very high in protein so I often chose those main dishes with chicken or turkey for lunch and/or dinner. I got hooked on huge toss salads with grilled chicken! I also would eat lots of grilled fish.

*My snacks were fruits, cold veggies and fat free ranch (for taste and protein), sugar free jello which is really very good and cures a sweet tooth, low cal fat free yogurt (more protein), pretzels, or other low cal/low fat items.

3. I also found that WATER is very important. Water helps flush the fat cells from your body. Drinking eight 8oz glasses a day is the recommended to MAINTAIN your body weight but to loose weight if you drink 1 oz of water for every 2 lbs you weigh then it washes out additional fat cells. I would buy one bottle of water every morning and then refill it all day long… "trying" to drink 1 bottle every hour or 2. Adding lemon to it will help with the taste and the lemon is also a natural diuretic which helps your body not to retain the water at all (you will urinate more often).

It is hard to remember to eat and most of the time your not hungry but I promise, it works! My co-workers made fun of me for eating all the time and then when I lost the weight they all joined the band wagon and copied my plan and did it too… and all lost weight!
