Would mixing the flavors of matcha green tea and spiced chai tea work?
I’m in Johnson & Wales University majoring in Baking & Pastry Arts. I am currently in a petit gateaux (think little individual cakes) class, and for the final practical exam (which will be in two weeks) we have to create our own petit gateaux. I want to use matcha green tea and one of my group members wants to try spiced chai tea. Would these two flavors be at all compatible? Has anyone tried it? It seems like an odd mix at first, but there are stranger still that have worked. Thanks for the input!
If they can make bacon, olive oil, and other savory items into successful ice cream/dessert flavors, I’m sure there’s a way this can be done.
I suppose I should make sure it’s clear that we’ll be making a cake with components flavored with each type of tea (or combination of spices as is the case with chai). I’m sure that the chai’s profile would greatly overshadow that of the matcha, but sometimes such a combination can be made to work if the right ratios and components are used.
Perhaps something as simple as a chai cake with matcha ice cream or wrapped in a matcha jaconde, or the other way around. Maybe a small quantity of chai in relation to matcha.
I mostly want to see if anyone has ever tried such a thing before and how it turned out.
I don’t know how those two might go together.
Matcha is a pretty mellow flavor in my opinion, and chai is definitely a strong flavor with all of the spices in it.
I think the chai would over shadow the matcha.
Just try the two flavors together, and at different strengths to see if you can get them to come together better. Try a stronger brew of the matcha and maybe a weaker one of the chai, just so you can get an idea of how strong each flavor has to be so that they aren’t competing with each other.
